Makati Science studes bag
awards in world math quiz

THREE MAKATI SCIENCE High School students showcased their mathematics prowess as they represented the Philippines and grabbed awards in the International Mathematics Competition in Chiang Mai, Thailand, Oct. 25-30.
Aldrich Aldwin Aberilla Mayoralgo of I-Galileo Galilei bagged a silver medal, while Andrew Joelle Fabio Caguntas of I-Galileo Galilei and Joel Edward Berces Cardinal of IV-Madame Marie Curie copped bronze medals.
Mayoralgo grabbed the silver medal in the elementary school team competition, while Caguntas and Cardinal snatched bronze medals in the elementary and the secondary school individual competitions, respectively.
Mayoralgo represented the Xavier School in the City of San Juan; Caguntas, Bangkal Elementary School, City of Makati; and Cardinal, Makati Science, City of Makati during the competition.
The Philippines garnered 39 medals, placing fourth among 25 countries, with math powerhouse China topping the tilt with 51 medals followed by host Thailand with 49 and Indonesia, 41.
“Our contestants rose above the challenge and proved that they can compete with other students from other countries. We, at the Mathematics Trainers Guild (MTG)-Philippines, are very happy with their outstanding performance,” said Dr Simon Chua, MTG-Philippines president.
Tailing the Philippines were Taiwan, 37; Bulgaria, 25; Hong Kong, 23; Singapore, 16; Malaysia, 10; and South Korea, 10.
The Philippine delegation battled against elementary and secondary school math wizards from other countries, which include Iran, Laos, India, China, Brunei, Cyprus, Taiwan, Nigeria, Canada, Bulgaria, Rwanda, Malaysia, Australia, Thailand, Germany, Indonesia, Singapore, Bangladesh, Hong Kong, South Korea, South Africa, and The Netherlands.
