How to Write a Movie Review
By The Makati Science Vision Editorial Staff
A MOVIE REVIEW is a brief critique of a movie. It is written to guide prospective viewers.
In writing a movie review, indicate the subject—the title, the screen play writer, the director, and the producer of the movie. Include the earlier works of the screen play writer, the director, and the producer of the movie.
State when and where the movie was produced. Include historical background to enable prospective viewers to place the movie into a specific context. State who the main characters in the movie are and who acted them. Include the best character or characters and his, her, or their best line or lines.
Briefly review the storyline. Include the best part or parts and the best quotation or quotations of the movie but do not reveal the ending. Describe the general problem the movie addresses. Is it instructive, entertaining, interesting, or memorable? Why? Why not?
Respond to the screen play writer’s opinions. What do you agree to? And why? What do you disagree to? And why? Relate your arguments with other movies, local or foreign.
Explore social issues the movie raises. What possibilities do the movie suggests? Explain. What matter the movie leaves out? Explain. Relate the movie to larger social issues. How did the movie affect you? How is the movie related to your own personal life?
Conclude with a direct comment on the movie. Did the screen play writer, the director, the producer, and the actors of the movie do a good job? Why? Why not? How could the movie be improved?
Offer a sound advice to the prospective viewers and rate the movie using a scale of 1-5 stars: *-poor, **- fair, *** - good, ****- very good, ***** - excellent..
