Do the Impossible

EVERY TIME YOU switch a television program to a news and current affairs program, chances are, it is the same as the program that you watched yesterday, only a different day, a different case, and a different angle. It is almost as if we havea constant schedule of rallies, murders, and impeachment trials. In our country, graft and corruption, along with the poverty and the destitution that trigger it, seem to be the underlying causes for our situation. Our nation is trapped in a loop of never-ending greed. This can make one wonder if the Philippines will ever free itself from the tangled mess it is in.

The Philippines has gone through so much since its independence from American colonial rule. Our people have gone through revolts, dictators, martial law, coup d’états, impeachment trials, and its fair share of political scandals. Still, the economic situation of those less fortunate of our brethren has not improved, if not worsened.

Are we really to condemn ourselves to this repetitive lifestyle? Are we really planning on reliving our mistakes over and over again and not learning from them?

If we do not want corruption, we must do something about it right now and not just procrastinate along the way. We may all wish for a better future, but the truth is wishing can only go so far. We have to step into action. It is like in class, if we pray to God to make us pass, He will, but only if we deserve it. If we only pray and then go online and play games all day or all night long and not study at all, we are still going to fail. So, if we want a better tomorrow, a better country and a better nation, we must not be idle and just wait for someone to do something about it. We have to be the ones to take action.

We must not tolerate corruption. Even more so, we must not submit ourselves to it. We must be strong. We must be honest citizens. We must be united under the goal of a new society, one that is free from greed and corruption.

Maybe not everyone will agree with me, especially traditional politicians who have had their way for years. Our task at hand is daunting. And at times, it is impossible though it is not as hopeless as sitting and dreaming that one day the Philippines will be get rid of corruption and poverty.
