Based from The Makati Science Vision survey to 136 fourth year students, 33.96 percent of the respondents watch free television and only 25.61 percent listen to the radio, 16.71 percent read magazines, 12.94 percent watch movies, and 10.78 percent read newspapers.
Television
On the average, fourth year students watch free television for three hours on weekdays and four hours on weekends.
ABS-CBN Channel 2 emerged to be the station that they trust most, consequently copping the first slot, followed by GMA Channel 7 and ETC; all of which had ratings of 30.88 percent, 16.91 percent, and 10.29 percent, respectively.
Consequently, the favorite stars are Angel Locsin with 7.41 percent and Kris Aquino with 4.63 percent, both Kapamilya stars. On the third place are Toni Gonzaga, another Kapamilya star, and Tyra Banks with a rating of 3.79 percent.
Consistently, Game K N B?, a Kapamilya show topped the survey with 4.17 percent, followed by Pinoy Big Brother and MTV’s Pimp My Ride, both with 2.45 percent, and then TV Patrol World with 2.21.
Radio
The survey revealed that 34.56 percent of the fourth year students owned two radios; 29.41 percent, three; and 17.65 percent, one.
Love Radio placed first with a 27.07 percent rating, followed by WRR 101.9 with 18.34 percent, then Yes! FM with 13.37 percent.
Magazines and Periodicals
According to the survey, the most read magazines among the fourth year are Candy Magazine, 9.31 percent; Reader’s Digest, 7.60 percent; and K-Zone, 7.11 percent. Similarly, the top three comics are Laughtrip, 5.88 percent; Pugad Baboy, 5.15 percent; and The Amazing Spiderman, 4.67 percent.
The survey showed that the fourth year students favor a more girlish type of magazine, in which we can conclude that this arose because of the dominance in number of girls over boys in the level.
Movies
After evaluating the survey, the three movies that emerged popular are the following; Spiderman 3, 5.58 percent; Shrek the Third, 3.55 percent; and Pirates of the Caribbean 3: At World’s End, 2.94 percent. This might be because the survey was conducted when these films were at their height.
In the video films category, Troy ranked first with 2.21 percent, followed by The Nun with 1.35 percent, and High School Musical with 1.16 percent.
On an average, fourth year students visit the movie house at least two to three times a year.
Newspapers
Though ranked last in the survey, newspapers are also favored by students: the Philippine Daily Inquirer, 27.70 percent; the Manila Bulletin, 24.02 percent; and The Philippine Star, 19.85 percent.
Moreover, the survey showed that fourth year students prefer reading the Entertainment section, with 24.26 percent rating, followed by the News section with 19.61 percent and the Sports section with 14.22 percent.
On weekdays, 18.38 percent of students read for 30 minutes; 16.91 percent for an hour; and 10.29 percent for 10 minutes.

Lastly, Avril Lavigne with 12.50 percent rating; Sarah Geronimo, 9.56 percent; and Kelly Clarkson, 5.15 percent; topped the favorite pop star category, while The Pussycat Dolls, 11.03 percent; Fall Out Boy, 6.62 percent; and N’Sync, 4.41 percent; topped the favorite pop group category. |
